Work out the tip on a restaurant bill and, if you like, split the total evenly between several people.
How it works
Tip amount = Bill amount × Tip % ÷ 100. Total bill = Bill amount + Tip amount. Per person = Total bill ÷ number of people. All amounts are shown to two decimal places, labelled with the site-wide currency chosen in the Settings menu (no conversion takes place).
Results update as you change any value. The tip is calculated on exactly the amount you enter as the Bill amount.
How to use it
- Enter the Bill amount.
- Drag the Tip slider, or tap one of the preset percentages.
- If you are splitting the bill, enter how many people in Split between.
- Read the Tip amount, Total bill and Per person figures, and click Copy to copy a one-line summary.
Options & controls
Inputs
- Bill amount
- The bill in the current currency, in steps of 0.01. Must be 0 or more; leave it empty or negative and the results disappear. Default: 50.
- Split between (people)
- A whole number, 1 or more. An empty or invalid entry counts as 1, and any decimals are ignored. Default: 1.
- Tip slider
- From 0% to 40% in whole-percent steps. The current value is shown in its label. Default: 18%.
- Preset buttons (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%)
- Jump the slider to that tip. The button matching the current tip is highlighted.
- Reset
- In the title row. Restores a 50.00 bill, 18% tip and 1 person.
Reading the results
Results
- Tip amount
- The whole tip for the table.
- Total bill
- The bill plus the tip.
- Per person (of N)
- The total bill divided equally. “(of N)” appears when more than one person is entered.
- Copy
- Copies a summary, for example “Tip: $9.00 — Total: $59.00 — $29.50 per person (of 2)”.
Tips & guidelines
- Enter the amount you want to tip on. If tipping customs in your country are based on the bill before tax, enter the pre-tax figure.
- Tipping norms vary widely — some places include service, others expect none. The presets are conveniences, not recommendations.
- The per-person figure is a straight even split. If people ordered very different amounts, work out each share separately.
- The amounts are not rounded to a whole unit. If you want to leave a round total, adjust the slider or tip by hand.
Limits
- Only an equal split is supported — no per-person items, and no separate tip-per-person figure.
- The tip is a percentage; a flat tip amount cannot be entered directly.
- Percentages above 40% cannot be set.
