How it works
Room area = Room length × Room width. Material needed = Room area × (1 + Waste allowance ÷ 100). If you enter an Area per box, Boxes needed = Material needed ÷ Area per box, rounded up to a whole box.
The tool does not convert units. Use one unit for length and width (feet or metres) and the matching area unit (square feet or square metres) for the area per box.
How to use it
- Enter the Room length and Room width in the same unit.
- Leave the Waste allowance at 10% or change it for your layout.
- If the product is sold in boxes, enter the Area per box from the packaging.
- Read the Room area, Material needed (with waste) and Boxes needed.
Options & controls
Inputs
- Room length
- In feet or metres. Must be greater than 0. Default: 12.
- Room width
- In the same unit as the length. Must be greater than 0. Default: 10.
- Waste allowance %
- Extra material for cuts, breakage and mistakes, as a percentage of the room area. Empty or negative counts as 0. Default: 10.
- Area per box (optional)
- How much area one box covers, in square feet or square metres, printed on the packaging. Leave empty if you do not need a box count. Default: empty.
- Reset
- In the title row. Restores the sample values (and empties Area per box).
Reading the results
Results
- Room area
- Length × width, in square units, before any waste.
- Material needed (with waste)
- Room area plus the waste allowance. This is the area to buy.
- Boxes needed
- Only shown when you have entered an Area per box. Rounded up to a whole number.
- Copy
- Copies the figures shown as text.
- Assumptions & notes
- A reminder to round up to full boxes and confirm coverage with the supplier. On phones it sits behind a toggle.
Tips & guidelines
- About 10% waste is common for a straight layout of tiles or planks. Diagonal, herringbone and patterned layouts, and rooms with many corners or cut-outs, often call for 15% or more.
- Buy all the boxes at once, and a spare box if you can. Batches can vary slightly in colour, and having a few spare pieces makes future repairs possible.
- For an L-shaped or irregular room, measure each rectangular part, calculate it separately, and add the results.
- Measure the whole floor area, even where cabinets or a bath will sit, unless you are sure you will not lay flooring there.
Limits
- Rectangular rooms only; the tool does not subtract fixtures, alcoves or stairs.
- It calculates area, not the number of individual tiles or planks, grout, adhesive or underlay.
- It does not convert between metric and imperial units.
