Fuel Cost Calculator

Fuel needed = Distance ÷ Fuel efficiency. Estimated cost = Fuel needed × Fuel price.

The tool works in whatever units you give it, as long as they are consistent: kilometres with km per litre and a price per litre, or miles with miles per gallon and a price per gallon. Fuel needed is shown as a plain number in the unit of fuel you chose (litres or gallons), and the cost is labelled with the site-wide currency from Settings.

1. Enter the trip Distance.
2. Enter your vehicle's Fuel efficiency — how far it goes on one unit of fuel.
3. Enter the Fuel price per unit of fuel, in the same unit.
4. Read Fuel needed and Estimated cost, and click Copy if you want to paste the result.

• Match the units. If efficiency is in km per litre, the distance must be in km and the price must be per litre. Mixing miles with litres gives a meaningless result.
• Many cars quote consumption as litres per 100 km (L/100 km) instead. That is the opposite way round; convert it first by dividing 100 by it — 8 L/100 km is 100 ÷ 8 = 12.5 km/L.
• For a return trip, double the distance. To split costs between passengers, divide the cost yourself or use the Tip Calculator's split.
• Use your real-world efficiency from the last few fill-ups rather than the manufacturer's figure, which is usually optimistic.

• It is an estimate: speed, traffic, hills, air conditioning, load and tyre pressure all change real consumption.
• Tolls, parking, and the wear on your vehicle are not included.
• There is one price and one efficiency for the whole trip; you cannot mix motorway and city driving.
• The tool does not convert between metric and imperial units for you.
